In 1989, Japanese scientists from Waseda University discovered a small tunnel under its left paw. A seismological scan by American geophysicist Thomas Dobecki a year later revealed that the passage led to sealed chambers. However, further research was halted by Egyptian authorities, who banned scientists from working in the monument area.
Archaeologist Zahi Hawass got round this ban by using geodetic radar. But he found only an empty network of galleries and chambers. Nevertheless, he believes that one day scientists will be able to solve the mystery of the “Hall of Knowledge”.
