A group of scientists from Indonesia has proved that the megalithic structure Gunung Padang is the oldest known pyramid in the world. This is reported in an article published in the journal Archaeological Prospection.
Gunung Padang is located on top of an extinct volcano in West Java (Indonesia). Some experts suggest that it was created naturally and humans added a few architectural embellishments on top, while others argue that the hill was entirely or mostly man-made.
Between 2011 and 2015, researchers studied the structure using seismic tomography, electrotomography and GPR. They also drilled the hill and collected core samples, which allowed them to use radiocarbon dating techniques to find out the age of the layers that make up the hill. It turned out that Gunung Padang was largely made by human hands.
